WHAT DO I WEAR TO MY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

I’m so excited to have you and your family members joining me in the studio soon! In my 11 years of experience being a professional photographer, I believe the number one question family’s have is what to wear! It’s such a great question, and often gives parents a bit of anxiety trying to figure it out. But there’s no need to worry! I’m here to help! Below you’ll find some tips on what to wear during different types of sessions.

If Mom doesn’t have anything that fits at home please do get in touch with us to use a dress from our Client Closet (dresses fit maternity and non-maternity) and we can coordinate the rest of the family’s outfits to go with it.

In the end you’ll want to choose outfits that reflect your family’s wardrobe style and would be happy to put up on your wall.

Pro Tip: Avoid logos, huge Disney characters on shirts, words on shirts and neon colours. Any words and characters on shirts will easily fold and you won’t see the words, especially as we try to get close connections with family members. Avoid really bright and bold busy patterns unless it is part of a cultural outfit which we do encourage clients to incorporate if it’s important to them.

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY WHAT TO WEAR FAMILY STYLING

We recommend keeping your family’s clothing choices basic. The family, sibling and parent portraits taken are really all about the connection and bond between family members and so we recommend not having too busy of patterns or too bright of fabrics that might distract from that connection. We suggest choosing 2-4 colours that go well together, shades of one colour, neutrals or soft tones and if you have decided to have your newborn wrapped up for those portraits then we’ll coordinate the colour with your outfits or we can have baby stand out.

Below you’ll see some examples of family’s at their baby session and what outfits reflected their personalities.

MATERNITY WHAT TO WEAR FAMILY STYLING

Family’s are so diverse and their maternity family styling can show that diversity. While we offer a great variety of dresses for Moms to wear in our client closet, we recommend partners choose an outfit that corresponds with one or more of Mom’s chosen outfits (whether that outfit comes from our closet or from home).

Some partners like to wear casual jeans with a dress shirt, while others like to get decked out in a suit or dress. We love when partners are excited to share in this special session but there’s also something sweet about involving your other children as well. Children can wear simple outfits like jeans and a plain t-shirt or go full on fancy like the rest of the family in a suit or dress. It’s really up to your family’s own personal style.

The time of year for outdoor portraits should be considered as well so that everyone is comfortable but also goes with the feel of the park (richer tones for Fall for example). To see more examples of what clients have chosen to wear for their maternity photoshoots check out the photos for both studio and outdoor maternity portraits in our portfolio.

BABY MILESTONE PHOTOGRAPHY WHAT TO WEAR FAMILY STYLING

Many family’s choose to include a family set during their baby milestone photography session. We recommend choosing between 2-4 colours that are free from busy patterns so your connection with your baby can shine through. We’ll go through a variety of poses on neutral colours backdrops and you’ll be able to choose which images are your favourites in your proofing gallery. The baby milestone session consists of 3 sets, family portraits take one of those set choices with the remaining being all about baby. Siblings are welcome to join in the family set as well. The family set will take place at the beginning of the session and must be pre-booked before your session date. Below you’ll see examples of what parents have worn to their family portraits with their baby during the session inside the studio. To see outfits that baby’s wear you can scroll down or take a look at our Baby Portfolio to see more examples of outfits clients have brought in and outfits we provide like the ones below. To see some examples of the baby outfits available for your son or daughter to wear available from our baby client closet.
