NEWBORN SET CHOICES

Jen believes in a baby-led newborn photography session. This means that if a baby doesn’t like a certain pose (for example on their belly) we will switch the pose to something else. We don’t guarantee any pose and not all poses or sets are used for every session. Based on the amount of images and sets your package comes with, Jen will pre-plan a session with your chosen colour palette for your baby and family portraits and make any changes during the session if baby is wide awake for example. If there is a specific set you’ve seen in our portfolio that you love do let us know! No matter what sets photographed, you will love your portraits!

Take a look below to see examples of sets we’ve done for past clients

PARENT SETS

Parent and Newborn Poses are some of the most important portraits Jen takes in the studio. There are variations of each pose depending on the size of your baby, your mobility (where you can comfortably place baby), etc. So you'll never see two poses look exactly the same. Poses also have variations based on looking in the camera, looking at your baby, closing your eyes, giving baby a kiss, etc. Below you'll see the main poses Jen will offer you in the studio (she offers 2 per parent, with the combination of the three of you in each one of those poses, so a lot of variety to choose from in your proofing gallery) and you'll notice the differences if baby is wrapped or naked. If you see a pose that you just love below you can let Jen know during the planning process so she can make a note to try it during your session. No pose is guaranteed as it depends on baby's temperament on the day of your session. As with the Family and Sibling Poses, these poses are currently being offered on neutral choices - grey, taupe, white or white brick backdrop. If you are looking for a specific backdrop colour instead of our neutral choices please inquire during the planning process.

Cradle hold Pose - Jen recommends this pose as one of the two poses for each parent. It's a classic and is the position most parents use when bonding with their baby.

On Your Chest Pose Facing In - This is a classic pose because we often hold our baby's in this position. Every baby is different so we base the pose on how baby naturally settles on your chest.

On Their Belly Pose - This pose requires baby to be in a deep sleep and doesn't work if they are wrapped. It's a sweet little pose Jen normally suggests for Dad's.

Cheek to Cheek Pose - This pose has you cross your arms and then Jen places baby as close to your face as possible. You will be able to tell right away if the pose feels uncomfortable for your arms, in which case we would change to a different pose. I often recommend this pose for Mom's so they can close their eyes next to baby.

On Your Chest Pose Facing Out - Baby’s feel very comfortable in this position and it’s a great pose if Mom or Dad is in a special uniform.

Burrito Hold Pose - We call it this because baby’s look like a cute little burrito. This one is a Dad favourite too as baby looks so small in their hands, but works for Mom's too! You can see variations of baby wrapped or naked.

FAMILY SET

Depending on each family's personality, Jen will create portraits where family's are looking at the camera and looking down at baby. Most clients prefer the 3/4 and up portraits as it allows a close up of the family rather than further away in a full body portrait. Depending on the age of older siblings, we work closely with each family to see what pose position works best for them and their kids ages.

Backdrops for the family portraits are on grey, white brick, white and taupe.

SIBLING SET

Depending on your other child's age, Jen will create a classic set with a white brick, taupe or grey backdrop depending on your chosen colour palette, that shows off their bond. Some children are old enough to hold their siblings in their laps, but often the children that come into the studio are on the younger side so getting a portrait from above like the ones with the twins or the one where baby is in basket is the easiest pose for them to achieve. We aim for two different types of poses (bucket pose with head on hands with the girl below is only offered if you have chosen a bucket pose as one of your main sets). A relaxed atmosphere is key to success!

GRANDPARENT SET - *not currently available

Grandparents love snuggling new baby's and it's my honour to create Generational Portraits for you and your family to enjoy.

At this time, we are not photographing Legacy Portraits to limit the amount of people in the studio due to Covid-19...but we are looking forward to seeing those smiling faces soon!

INDIVIDUAL BABY POSES

Below you’ll see a variety of poses we create in the studio. We choose a variety of sets for each client based on their chosen colour palette and who is joining baby in the studio for portraits. We don’t guarantee any particular set and we try to make each newborns set unique to them.

Blanket Poses are dependent on baby's temperament on the day of the session. Jen will try to achieve 2 different poses for each Blanket Pose Set chosen in the colour palette of your choice. Every baby is posed slightly different because every baby is different and will relax into a pose the way they want to. We listen to baby’s cues and change posing according to their needs.

There is no guarantee of a specific pose, Jen will see how your baby is feeling on the day of the session. Some poses can work when baby is awake and other's require baby to be sleeping (for example the bucket and bed poses). Jen will soothe your baby into sleep if she can, if not, she'll transition to poses that are best suited for awake babies. Either way, Jen will take good care of your baby with their safety and comfort in mind and make any adjustments needed if baby is not liking a certain pose (for example some baby’s do not like being on their belly’s).

If your baby has a special cast on their legs or hips or arms, please do let us know before your session so we can plan accordingly.

Take a look below at some of the adorable newborn’s that came into the studio and the art we created together.

Side Lying Pose - Jen will pose your baby in a variation of the side lying pose with full body shots and close up shots to choose from in your online proofing gallery.

Huck Finn Pose - This is a great pose when baby's are awake and looks great with a wrap or outfit.

Relaxed Pose - This is a great pose for older baby's or if they are awake. We usually get great expressions and if we're lucky some sleepy smiles!

Details Set - This set is for the Mom's and Dad's who want to capture their baby's tiny features in classic black and white. We love their tiny toes and little eye lashes! A great set for any age.

Flower Bed Set - This fun pose is custom to your chosen colours. Jen will wrap your baby so that they can stay in one position and will move flowers closer to your baby. This would also work well with greenery for a boy or a girl. This is a great pose for older babies.

Baby Fluff Set - This set is soft as a cloud and with our rainbow fluff it works great for Rainbow Baby’s.

Bed Set - This set is for baby's who are asleep only. Jen will do a variation of baby on their tummy or on their side. This pose requires a safety spotter with their hand hovering just above baby which has been edited out of these pictures. If you would like a bed pose Jen will explain where you need to be positioned and where your hands need to be in order to make sure baby is safe at all times. We have a number of beds of different lengths, some working best for smaller babies and some best for bigger babies. Jen will create a set based on your chosen colour palette and the size of your baby. Usually an outfit will be put on as well. We don't recommend this set be chosen for baby's older than 3-4 weeks old as they need to be in a deep sleep. If baby is awake we will not be able to do this pose.

Prop Shot from Above Set - Your baby in a prop where Jen photographs your newborn from above (bird's eye view). Jen creates the set based on your chosen colour palette and has lot of props to create a unique set for your baby! Your baby will be wrapped, especially if they are awake and not settling to sleep or in a cute outfit. A great set for baby's of any age.

*Newly Added* Wrap Above Pose - This fun wrapped pose is a great pose for older babies and if baby is awake. Jen creates this pose on a blanket that matches your chosen colour palette.

Bum Up Pose - This is Jen's signature blanket pose. She'll get varying angles and close up images.

Head on Hands Pose - This pose works best when baby's are asleep. It's a great pose to add a headband or hat too.

Tucked In Pose - This sweet pose is like a portrait of your baby tucked in at night.

Flokati Set - This is such a sweet set where Jen wraps baby in a swaddle and puts your son or daughter on a flokati or faux fur based on your chosen colour palette. This is a great pose for older babies and for those that are wide awake.

Personal Prop Set - Clients bring in a personal prop for this set from simple items such as a rosary to more unique props like heirloom Cradleboards. Please discuss with Jen any idea that you had to see if it's possible to create that scene in our studio.

Bucket Set - Your baby in a sweet bucket with a variation of the Head on Hands pose.  Baby may be in an outfit or just their diaper.  This pose requires a safety spotter right next to baby at all times.  Jen will ask a parent to be right next to baby with their hand on baby's head.  Once Jen is in position to take the picture she'll ask you to lift your hand a few inches above baby's head, while you never take your eyes off baby.  Anytime baby shifts in their sleep you would put your hand back down until they settle again.  This pose will only work when baby is asleep so if your baby is having a hard time falling asleep Jen will not put your baby into this prop pose and we recommend it for baby's under 4 weeks old. Colours are based on your chosen colour palette.

Composite Set - This set is mostly the magic of Photoshop. Jen will place baby, usually wrapped, on fur or wool fluff to match the composite backdrop you choose during the planning time before our session date. Composites allow us to have more elaborate sets that are not possible to reproduce during our session time. This is a great set for baby's of any age and those that are awake.

Some of our Composite Backgrounds. See our Full Composite Options currently available here and if you would like a specific one in your session please let us know during the planning process.
