Older Newborn Photography | Ransher 2.5 months | Kingston Newborn Photographer
Many photographers find it hard to photograph older newborn baby’s that are over 2 weeks old because they tend to be more alert, like to stretch and have a harder time falling asleep. I’m not like other photographers and I love to rise to a challenge! I often have babies over 2 weeks old in the studio. They come in later than a typical newborn for a variety of reasons including:
NICU stays (perhaps they had jaundice or more serious complications after birth).
Maybe their parents didn’t feel ready to leave the house and go to other appointments besides doctor visits because having a baby, as any Mom or Dad will tell you can be overwhelming, especially if things are not going as planned (maybe the baby is having a hard time latching during breastfeeding or are suffering from Colic and their parents are just plain exhausted.
Some cultural traditions ask parents to stay indoors with their babies until they are 100 days old, etc.
Some parents have never thought of having newborn portraits taken or thought they had more time to plan and decided after baby was already home that it would be great idea to capture this beautiful stage of their baby’s life while they were tiny. Babies grow so so fast - faster than we expect really!
Whichever reason for contacting me, parents often think they are too late for newborn portraits. That they’ve missed the opportunity to capture this moment! I’m here to say, you’ve not missed anything. A baby can be beautifully photographed by a professional and experienced photographer at any age. If we plan a newborn session according to their age and have the appropriate expectations of what the session might be like then parents will enjoy the experience of an older newborn photography session and the portraits we create together so much more. Yes, older newborns can be a challenge, and often are awake and quite squirmy, but they are also full of personalities and expressions you just don’t get with a brand new, less than 2 week old newborn session. There is something beautiful about every stage of your baby’s development so don’t feel like you missed out. You didn’t miss out on a thing!
Ransher’s family contacted me when he was 2.5 months old and we were able to get him into the studio right away (it is best to book earlier if possible only because my schedule does fill up quickly. I do recommend planning your newborn sessions while you are still pregnant, but I luckily had the space for Ransher when his parents thought it was too late). He was bright eyed and full of wonder and I love the portraits we created together. Yes, he’s not posed in traditional newborn poses but he is beautiful and just perfect and he deserved to be celebrated at every stage of his life. It was a pleasure to meet him and I wanted to share a few of his family’s favourite portraits with you and some other examples of older newborns that have come into the studio. You have nothing to worry about. We plan these types of sessions knowing there is a greater chance that they will be awake for much of their session but that doesn’t mean we don’t get lucky sometimes and have sleepy time too.
If you have an older newborn and want newborn portraits please do get in touch right away and I’ll see if we have space in the schedule to accommodate a last minute booking. If you are still pregnant I do recommend booking your newborn due date into the calendar while you are in your 2nd or 3rd trimester so that I reserve space for your baby whether they need to stay in the NICU or wait at home longer before coming to the studio to see me. It’s always fun to plan ahead! You can learn more about Newborn Portraits in our Studio on our Newborn page.
Here are some examples of older newborn portraits that I’ve taken in the studio.
