Red Props in Newborn Portraits: Top 2 reasons why using red may be perfect for your new baby!

You’re having a baby (YEAH!!!) and you’re thinking about getting newborn portraits taken of your little boy or girl when they make their arrival.  It’s exciting to plan for your newborn photoshoot and think about all the props and set ups your newborn photographer will lovingly create for you.  If you are in Kingston, Ontario or the surrounding area then I hope it will be me but if you live far away and you’re looking for advice on using red in your newborn portrait session then you’ve come to the right place!

Expert Advice from a Newborn Photographer on Using Red in Newborn Portraits

Red is often known as the colour of passion.  But it can also signify other things depending on the time of year and the culture you’re from.  Let’s take a look at these two important reasons for incorporating red into your baby’s portraits.

1. Incorporating Red in your Newborn Portraits for the Holidays

Red is a great colour to use when you are close to the most romantic day of the year - Valentine’s Day!  If your baby was born around this special holiday then incorporating red in different props works great.  You can use red in the soft knitted wraps used, the delicate floral headbands or buckets themselves.  I love using red as a blanket for babies to lay on or using artificial flowers to create wreaths or other sets for baby’s to be around.  You can use red rose petals or little hearts to bring in the love of this special time of year.

Red is of course one of the main colours of Christmas too!  Using red in conjunction with other festive colours around this special holiday, allows you to celebrate both your baby’s birth and the holiday spirit!  I love pairing red with green and white together in scarfs, wraps, and little stuffed animals.

2. Incorporating Red in your Newborn Portraits for Cultural Significance

I’m lucky enough to have quite a few clients who are Asian who love using red in their maternity, newborn and baby portraits because it signifies luck, joy and happiness.  Often we’ll incorporate something red into their newborn sessions but also it can be used during the 100 Day Old celebration signifying the end of the first 100 days which can be the most vulnerable for Mom and Baby.  There is usually a celebration and many clients will bring their babies into the studio at 100 days to mark the beginning of the rest of their first year of life.

Red is a joyful colour especially in Asian cultures.  Many Indian brides will wear a red Sari (Saree) because it reflects the inner strength of the Indian Woman.  I am always so happy when clients bring in something that means the world to them.  Sari’s have often been brought in and are almost always red and gold.  What a gift it is to have your newborn’s portraits with something of such importance to your family.  I love draping the red Sari over the newborn’s heads and parents always love those portraits the most. Grandparents too!

Many cultures have colours that are significant to them and when they bring in a piece of their heritage like this beautiful blanket and feather below I will take colours from the objects to put on their newborns.  I especially loved pairing this red textured wrap on this sweet little boy when his parents brought in this special blanket and feather.  Feather’s in First Nation culture can often symbolize strength, wisdom, and courage and a connection between the Creator, the animal that gave the feather and the owner of the feather.  This was a very special newborn portrait that his parents cherished.

Red is such a beautiful colour to incorporate into a newborn portrait session in our studio and we have a lot of different props in the different shades of red including outfits, hats, headbands, buckets, beds, and backdrops along with a wonderful red dress in our client closet for maternity portraits too.
